NCAA gives
New Mexico football program three years of probation
ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — The NCAA has penalized the University of New
Mexico with three years of probation for academic fraud within the
football program.
The NCAA infractions committee on Wednesday also
imposed scholarship reductions and limited the number of paid visits
provided to prospective football players.
The committee concluded that two former Lobo
assistants improperly helped one player and three recruits in 2004 to
obtain fraudulent academic credits through correspondence courses at
Fresno Pacific University.
The school already had self-imposed some
penalties, including two years of probation, after reviewing the coaches'
actions.
Louisville
QB Simms suspended for 4 games
LOUISVILLE (AP) — Louisville quarterback Matt Simms has been
suspended for the team's first four games of the season by coach Steve
Kragthorpe for a violation of team rules.
Simms, a redshirt freshman, was competing with
Tyler Wolfe for the backup spot behind starter Hunter Cantwell.
Simms is the son of former New York Giants
quarterback Phil Simms and the brother Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback
Chris Simms.
Matt Simms will be eligible to return to the
team when the Cardinals play at Memphis on Oct. 10.
A news release from Louisville had no further
details.
Former Sooners receiver Jarboe
transfers to Troy
Former Oklahoma wide receiver Josh Jarboe transferred to Troy on
Wednesday.
Jarboe, a freshman, was released by coach Bob Stoops earlier this month
after a cell phone video that contained expletives and violent references
made its way to YouTube.
Oklahoma stuck by its commitment to Jarboe after he was expelled
from his high school during his senior year of high school for bringing a
weapon onto campus.
"Troy University has always been interested in providing
opportunities for young people to better themselves, and this is a
situation where a young man who has made some mistakes is looking for a
second chance," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said in a statement
Wednesday.
"I have met with Josh, and I am convinced that he is ready, and
willing, to do the things we need for him to do to be a productive member
of both this football team and the Troy University community," he
said.
He had offers from more than 25 schools, including Ohio State and
North Carolina.
Troy spokesman Ricky Hazel said the school is still trying to
determine whether Jarboe will be allowed to play this season or need to
sit out one season under NCAA rules.
